High School Memories

This page is for general memories of high school - things about the various classes, the building itself, lunch time or anything that doesn't fit in the other categories.

Until 1922 when the high school we attended was built on Oak Street, the top floor of Irving housed the high school. In 1992 the new Anderson County Junior-Senior High School was built west of town on highway K-31 so there is no longer a Garnett High School.

Trivia: Our freshman year the required classes were English, Algebra or General Math and PE. The electives were Vocational Agriculture, Shop – Woodworking, Spanish 1, General Science, Home Economics 1, Driver Training, Music – Instrumental and Music – Vocal. Oddly we got half a credit for driver training but only a quarter of a credit for music or band.

This is Garnett High School as it was on our diplomas.

This is GHS from a 1930s graduation booklet.

The gym was added in 1949. This photo was taken in 2005.

This is the new addition shortly after it was added in 1963.

This was Garnett High School in 2005.

The following photos were taken 2005. The biggest change in the school since we were there were all the bright colors, probably because it was being used as an elementary school at that time. The old wood-shop had been converted into a library.

The auditorium looked pretty much the same.

The basement cafeteria doesn't seem as dark and drab.

Straight ahead was algebra class, library/study hall was at right.

I was never in the music room so do not know if it has changed.

The girls locker room hasn't changed at all.

Neither has the gymnasium.

The door to the principals office still looks foreboding!
